Designer Geoff Cobham, the man behind the Adelaide Festival’s popular Barrio late-night bar, and ceramics artist Milton Moon have been recognised at the 2013 Ruby Awards.
Presented by Arts SA, the awards celebrate the cultural contribution of the arts to South Australia and were announced at a gala function at the Dunstan Playhouse last night.
Cobham won the award for Sustained Contribution by an Individual, with judges praising his skill at turning everything from lighting to a space itself “from the ordinary to the sublime”.
The production manager, lighting/set/venue designer, and event producer has worked on numerous SA productions and festivals. As well as the shantytown-like Barrio space in Hajek Plaza, he was also the visionary behind previous Adelaide Festival night spots Red Square and Persian Garden.
The Premier’s Award for Lifetime Achievement was presented to lecturer and ceramic artist Milton Moon, who is acknowledged as one of Australia’s most senior potters, with more than 60 years’ experience. Moon was a recipient of a foundation Winston Churchill Fellowship, has work in all major Australian collections, has published a number of books, and was the subject of a retrospective at the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1991.
Ollie Black, Vitalstatistix Theatre Company co-founder and current manager of arts and cultural development for Country Arts SA, was awarded the Geoff Crowhurst Memorial Award for her more than three-decade contribution to community theatre.
Other winners included the Adelaide Cabaret Festival (Sustained Contribution by an Organisation), the Art Gallery of South Australia’s Turner from the Tate: The Making of a Master exhibition (Best Event) and Windmill Theatre’s Pinocchio (Best Event).
