Climate change is likely to be a hot topic at WOMADelaide this year, with environmentalist Tim Flannery the latest addition to a talk-fest line-up that includes former Labor minister and Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett and UK “ecocide” campaigner Polly Higgins.
Flannery was chief commissioner of Australia’s Climate Commission axed last year by the Abbott Government, and has since helped form a new community-funded Climate Council to replace it.
WOMADelaide director Ian Scobie said today the extensively published scientist and former Australian of the Year was an exciting addition to the 2014 Planet Talks, which will release its full program on January 28.
“As one of the world’s leading experts on climate change, Tim brings a wealth of practical experience and fundamental understanding of the key issues facing our planet today,” he said.
Scobie also announced a late addition to the WOMADelaide music program: Algerian singer and musician Rachid Taha, who is said to be known for his “rock ’n’ raï” attitude and a sound that blends rock, electronic, punk and raï influences.
WOMADelaide will be in Botanic Park from March 7-10.
