Poem: Rhythms

Nov 05, 2014, updated Mar 17, 2025

This week’s poems – about the rhythms of nature and familiar scenes – are from Adelaide contributor Michelle Juers.

Rhythms

Ticking clock
Beating heart
Sun’s rise and set
Lapping tides
falling raindrops

Universal metronomes.

Familiar Place

Return to the land of milk and honey
Open fires, kitchen table, full fridge

Rolling hills, green winter pastures
Dirt road leads to a dear friend

Small town supermarkets
Boast monopolising paraphernalia

Cold pews, stained glass windows
Liturgy found on page six

Diligent dairy farmer
Pastures cream of the crop

Generosity, kindness and compassion
In step and in kin

Helpful, cheerful, gregarious
Brother in arms length of living

Intelligence, creative genius
Limitless culinary accomplishment.
