What’s on: from the Bazaar to Bowie Unzipped
This weekend’s picks include Bowerbird Bazaar, a show for crafty types, music from the movies, after-hours art secrets, a unique take on the songs of David Bowie and an explosive new local play.
Bowerbird Bazaar – Adelaide Showground
More than 150 independent designers will be selling their wares over three days (Friday-Sunday) at the Bowerbird design market in Adelaide Showground’s Wayville Pavilion. You’ll find stalls with everything from clothing and jewellery, to homewares, furniture, artwork and stationery, as well as workshops, live entertainment, food and drink. More info here.
ASO’s Movie Masterpieces – Festival Theatre
For one night only tonight (Friday), the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is presenting Movie Masterpieces. Hosted by film critic Margaret Pomeranz (above) and conducted by Guy Noble, the concert will feature music from popular films including Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia, Harry Potter, ET and Pirates of the Caribbean.
First Friday – Art Gallery of SA
Tonight’s First Fridays after-hours event at the gallery has the theme Art of the Unknown, promising the chance to learn some of the secrets embedded in works of art on display in Magic Object, the 2016 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. As well as guided tours, it will include performances by Australian Dance Theatre, fire performer Sparky and Adelaide band Koral & The Goodbye Horses. The gallery also has a special program of events planned for the final days of the biennial next weekend (details here).
Gorgon – Space Theatre

“A little hand grenade of a play” is how InDaily’s reviewer has described this new work by Adelaide writer Elena Carapetis. Presented by the State Theatre Company of SA as part of its State Ed program, Gorgon explores teenage friendship and love, anger and grief after a tragedy involving two mates in their last year of high school. It is at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s State Theatre until May 7, before touring to Bordertown (May 17) and Port Augusta (May 25).
A Satirist’s Journey, by Bryan Dawe – Waterside
Satirist Bryan Dawe (of ABC’s Clarke and Dawe) will recount stories of his life and career – including about the creation of his characters Roly Parks and Sir Murray Rivers QC, and his partnership with John Clarke – in this “yarn / performance” tonight (Friday) at the Waterside Workers’ Hall in Port Adelaide. The show, timed to coincide with May Day, is also a joint fundraiser for Port-based arts organisation Vitalstatistix and the National Trouble Makers Union. Details here.
Spanish Film Festival – Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas
This festival opened on Wednesday at Palace and continues until May 22, with a packed line-up of films from across Spain and Latin America including comedies, dramas, romances and thrillers. The full program can be found on the official website.
Bortier Okoe – Nexus Arts
Ghanaian musician Bortier Okoe (above) kicks of the latest Nexus Live season on Saturday night with the launch of his new album, Dzeng Sane, which blends traditional West African instruments with guitar, horns and vocals. Okoe, known for his high-energy performances, will be supported by Dada Nii Okwabi and The Damushi Ensemble. The next Nexus Live show, on June 4, will feature Sikh musician Dya Singh.
Tasting Australia
The Tasting Australia food festival continues until Sunday, with a “tasting gallery”, Mother’s Day brunch and regional produce stalls among the attractions at the “Town Square” in Victoria Square. For information about all events, visit the official website.
Stitches and Craft Show – Adelaide Showground
A 10m-long crocheted flower garden and an exhibition of work by six South Australian textile artists are among the attractions at this three-day show in the Showground’s Jubilee Pavilion. There are also workshops, stalls, hands-on activities and fashion parades, plus a special area dedicated to those who “Love Vintage.” The Stitches and Craft Show continues from 10am-4.30pm today (Friday) and Saturday.

Bowie Unzipped – The Gov
Singer Jeff Duff will present his own interpretation of the songs of David Bowie in this two-hour show at the Governor Hindmarsh on Saturday night, with a band comprising guitarist Jak Housden from The Whitlams, keyboard player Glenn Rhodes and percussionist Jess Ciampa.
SA History Festival
There are more than 600 events across the state as part of this year’s History Festival, which continues until May 31. They range from open days and tours of buildings and sites of historic interest, to talks, exhibitions, performances and workshops. View the full program here.
The Two Gentlemen of Verona – Little Theatre
University of Adelaide Theatre Guild is presenting Shakespeare’s tale of the battle between loyalty and love at the Little Theatre, The Cloisters, Adelaide Uni, from May 7-21. Details here.
The Mikado – Adelaide Showground
The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of SA and Co-Opera production of this G&S comic opera is back in Adelaide after a tour of regional Australia. There will be six cabaret-style performances of The Mikado at the Thomas Edmonds Opera Studio, Adelaide Showground, from May 6-15. Details here.
Shields: Power and Protection in Aboriginal Australia – SA Museum
This exhibition at the South Australian Museum explores the role of shields in Aboriginal culture and history. As well as being used in individual and group conflict, carved and painted shields carry symbolism and affirm ancestral links. Shields continues until May 22.
