Game changer: Suzie Miller set to sizzle at Calile
On the eve of her latest play’s world premiere at Brisbane Festival, Suzie Miller will be up close and personal at Calile Culture, giving fans a chance to hear the story behind Strong is the New Pretty.
It’s a chance to hear from Australia’s hottest playwright the night before the world premiere of her latest play at Brisbane Festival.
On September 3 the Calile Culture series welcomes back celebrated Australian playwright Suzie Miller for an evening in conversation to discuss her new play, Strong is the New Pretty.
Acclaimed for RBG: Of Many, One and the international phenomenon Prima Facie, as well as Inter Alia, Miller turns her incisive theatrical eye to the origins of Australian Football League Women’s (AFLW) in Strong Is the New Pretty, revealing the people, decisions and defining moments behind one of the most significant shifts in Australian sport.
The play’s world premiere opens Brisbane Festival at QPAC’s Playhouse on September 4, and is a Brisbane Festival, Sydney Theatre Company and Trish Wadley Productions co-production.
The Calile Culture series invites leading creatives to explore inspiring topics, engage in meaningful dialogue and creative conversations covering a variety of themes and talents from literature, visual arts, design, performance and musical circles. The hotel’s website says “Calile Culture combines leisure and learning through an arty melange of cultural activities that we believe can help to broaden, enrich and connect us as a community.”

In conversation with moderator Stephanie Brantz, Miller and fellow panellists – Minerva Network Athletes Paralympian Madison de Rozario, AFLW foundation player Ally Anderson and Minerva Network Queensland co-lead Professor Sarah Kelly – will reflect on the broader themes at the heart of the story – from ambition and equality to community and change – and consider what the AFLW’s journey reveals about creating new possibilities for future generations.
Based on the struggle to establish a national women’s AFL competition, Strong is the New Pretty focusses on the untold story of the historical formation of the AFLW and the extraordinary characters that took the league from a pipe dream to a sensation.

At the Calile, Miller and the other guests will unpack the stories around the Women’s League and beyond football – exploring obstacles and opportunities along with the qualities required to succeed within their respective competitive arenas.
Broader themes of strength, resilience, ambition and equality will be explored – unveiling individual stories of breaking through barriers and setbacks to drive progress and change.
Aligning with Minerva Network’s mission of backing women at pivotal moments in their careers, the importance of community, mentorship and collective belief will also be addressed with a focus on creating pathways for future generations and how individuals and business can learn from the AFLW story of persistence, inclusion and its success to date.
Described as a love letter to a game and a community, the highly charged Strong is the New Pretty will provide a literary catalyst for what will be an inspiring, informative and entertaining evening.
A contemporary international playwright, screenwriter and novelist, Miller is based in both London and Sydney. Her plays has been produced around the world, winning multiple prestigious awards.
Prima Facie, winner of the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2023, has been translated into more than 50 languages, produced in more than 48 countries and published as a novel in 12 languages. Inter Alia is another acclaimed work that has been a huge hit and her play about former US Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, RBG: Of Many, One, will soon debut on Broadway.
Miller is educated in science and law, with a doctorate in drama and mathematics. She practised human rights law before writing fulltime and is currently developing major projects across the UK, the US and Australia in theatre, literature and screen.
