Police set up a large exclusion zone on the Bruce Highway near Rockhampton on Wednesday morning.

The crash involved seven vehicles including two prime movers and an army vehicle, according to media reports.

It is understood that military police attended the scene.

Three vehicles were located on fire and another four were extensively damaged, including a b-double truck, a semi-trailer (carrying a military tank), a flat-bed truck carrying two caravans, three cars, and a four-wheel-drive towing a caravan.

“Police have made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA), with the exclusion zone including the Bruce Highway, McLean Road and Bobs Creek Road,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

Grassfires that were caused by burning vehicles have since been contained, Queensland Fire and Rescue said

The QAS says six people have been taken to hospitals in Rockhampton and Gladstone. One of the patients taken to Rockhampton was in a serious condition and two others were stable.

All three people taken to Gladstone Hospital were stable, the service said.

The Bruce Highway is closed and there are a number of fires in the area as a result of the crash.

Freight operator Aurizon has confirmed that a portion of rail line in the area has been closed at the request of emergency services.
