‘Hottest’: Trump praises Sweeney’s controversial jeans ad

US President Donald Trump has praised actor Sydney Sweeney, who has faced heavy criticism for her American Eagle jeans ad.
The advertisement features the tagline “Sweeney has great jeans”, which has sparked backlash over apparent racial undertones of genetic superiority.
There has also been criticism of the hyper-sexualised nature of the advert given it was reportedly meant to be raising awareness of domestic violence.
It emerged on the weekend that Sweeney had registered as a Republican voter in Florida last year.
After hearing this detail, Trump answered a question from the media by throwing his support behind Sweeney.
“She’s a registered Republican? Oh, now I love her ad,” he said.
“You’d be surprised how many people are Republicans. That’s one I wouldn’t have known, but I’m glad you told me that.”

Later on Truth Social, Trump said Sweeney had “the “HOTTEST” ad out there.
“It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves’.
“Go get ‘em Sydney!”

The ad was launched in July and features the White Lotus actress making a play on words with “jeans” and “genes”.
“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour,” she says in one line as the camera pans up her jeans.
“My jeans are blue.”
In recent days, American Eagle was forced to respond to the backlash, which has continued since the campaign was launched.

“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans,” the company said. “Her jeans. Her story.”
Critics say the jeans campaign’s reference to blonde and blue-eyed Sweeney’s “great genes” alluded to the theory of eugenics.
“When eugenic theory started in America, it was saying that everything that was not centred around whiteness would make your gene pool bad,” TikTok activist Jeff Kissubi said.
“It was the word play of the advertisement that subtly mirrored far-right Americana themes.”
After praising Sweeney, Trump took the opportunity to slam “woke” advertisements.
“On the other side of the ledger, Jaguar did a stupid, and seriously WOKE advertisement, THAT IS A TOTAL DISASTER!” posted Trump.
“The CEO just resigned in disgrace, and the company is in absolute turmoil.
“Who wants to buy a Jaguar after looking at that disgraceful ad.
“Shouldn’t they have learned a lesson from Bud Lite, which went Woke and essentially destroyed, in a short campaign, the Company.”
He also launched a rant against singer Taylor Swift.
“Or just look at Woke singer Taylor Swift. Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can’t stand her (HATE!).
“She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT.
“The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.”
