Police are investigating after the body of a man was found on a busy motorway in northern NSW, after reports multiple cars had crashed into a motorbike.
Three cars have crashed into a motorbike, one after the other, forcing the northbound lanes of the busy M1 Pacific Motorway to be shut near Brunswick Heads.
The body of the motorcycle rider was discovered by passersby shortly after the crashes, which occurred at about 7.15pm on Sunday at Wilfred Street, Billinudgel, NSW.
The body is yet to be identified.
The closure of the Pacific Motorway forced cars off at the Riverside Crescent. They were able to rejoin the motorway at Yelgun, although that route is suitable only for light vehicles.
Heavy trucks were instructed to park up and wait, or consider delaying their journey.
Police are investigating the crash scene while the three car drivers were taken to Byron Bay and Tweed Valley hospitals for a mandatory testing.
All vehicles have been seized and will be forensically examined, NSW Police said.
