Daniil Medvedev has been fined more than a third of his US Open tournament prize money for his meltdown during a first-round loss to Benjamin Bonzi.
Daniil Medvedev has been fined more than $30,000 ($A46,000) after his meltdown during his first-round US Open loss to Benjamin Bonzi.
The former champion was furious Bonzi was allowed to retake his first serve at match point in the third set after a cameraman walked onto the court.
Medvedev protested against the decision to umpire Greg Allensworth and whipped up the crowd, shouting: “Are you a man? Why are you shaking? He wants to go home guys, he doesn’t like to be here. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour.”
The fiery Russian continued to incite the crowd, with the match delayed for more than six minutes before Bonzi was finally able to serve.
Medvedev saved the match point and won the third and fourth sets, but went on to lose the contest in the fifth, repeatedly smashing his racket on the court against his sideline chair, destroying the equipment.
He was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct and a further $12,500 ($A19,000) for abuse of rackets or equipment.
First-round prize money at the US Open this year is $110,000 ($A169,000), meaning Medvedev forfeits almost 40 per cent of his winnings.
