Sunshine Coast Airport will nearly double in size to accomodate an influx of visitors to the region.

The airport’s $170 million Terminal Redevelopment Project will increase the number of gates from five to seven – tripling the footprint of the departure lounge.

The project, designed by Populous | Fentress and constructed by McNab is expected to create about 2000 jobs over the next 18 months.

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Chris Mills said the terminal transformation reflected the airport’s commitment to world-class facilities for the region and would strengthen the Sunshine Coast’s role as a key tourism and business gateway.

The airport expected passenger numbers to increase from 1.8 million passengers in the 2026 financial year to 2.4 million by 2030.

The Terminal Redevelopment Project will be delivered in stages to minimise disruption.

The first stage is already underway, with the new outbound checked baggage handling facility scheduled for completion in early 2026 and the full domestic terminal expansion to be completed by 2027.

The full Terminal Redevelopment Project will reach a close in 2030.

As previously reported, Brisbane and Gold Coast airports are also undergoing major transformations in the lead up to the 2032 Olympics.
