Hundreds of jobs will be created in Gladstone after the Queensland government announced a $75 million investment in the region.

On Thursday, the National Reconstruction Fund announced an investment in Alpha HPA to support the completion of its construction and operation of the world’s largest High Purity Alumina (HPA) production facility in the region.

The project would deliver Australia’s first commercial-scale HPA facility, the government said, reinforcing the region’s role as a leading industrial and advanced manufacturing hub.

About 420 jobs would be created during construction, along with the 80 ongoing roles once the facility is in operation

Industry and Innovation Minister Tim Ayres said the investment would strengthen “Gladstone’s position as a major industrial hub”.

“This investment will deliver Australia’s first commercial‑scale High Purity Alumina facility in Central Queensland, creating hundreds of jobs,” he said in a statement.

Alpha HPA is used in modern chips, also known as semiconductors, to help conduct heat away from critical components.

By producing HPA domestically, Australia would be positioned at the centre of future technology global supply chains, the government said.
