Former US first lady Jill Biden’s ex-husband has been charged with murdering his wife, according to American media.

William Stevenson, 77, was indicted in Wilmington, Delaware, which is the hometown of former US president Joe Biden and Jill.

The charge followed the discovery of Stevenson’s current wife’s body in their home on December 28.

TMZ reports that police had responded to a report of a domestic dispute at the couple’s Delaware house.

William’s wife Linda Stevenson, 64, was found unresponsive in the living room about 11.15pm. Police officers gave first aid but could not revive her.

“Officers immediately administered life-saving measures; however, despite their efforts, Linda was later pronounced deceased,” police said.

The cause and manner of Stevenson’s death have not been released.

TMZ reports that dispatch audio from the incident mentions cardiac arrest and it was William who called emergency services.

William Stevenson was arrested on Monday (US time) and held in jail on $US500,000 bond ($713,000).
