Passengers were left suspended in the air when a rollercoaster at the Gold Coast’s Movie World became stuck on Wednesday.

Photos and videos shared on social media showed that the DC Rivals HyperCoaster was on an uphill part of the track when the ride stopped.

The temperatures at the time were reportedly around 30 degrees Celsius, and one eyewitnesses noted that the stranded passengers had been given umbrellas.

“People are climbing up…. There’s someone halfway going up to rescue people… that does not look like fun, whatsoever,” said Shane Treloar in a video posted on Facebook.

Some reports said the 20 people on board the rollercoaster were stuck about 10 metres above the ground for around two hours.

Despite the scare, they were all rescued safely, according to a statement from Village Roadshow Theme Parks.

“At all times throughout the stoppage, the guests on board were safe and our team were in constant communication with them,” it said.

“The guests on board exited the ride from the safe stop zones with the help of our team, before walking down the lift hill.”

According to the spokesperson, the stoppage was due to “a ride sensor activation”.

“The safety and wellbeing of our guests is our highest priority and ride stoppages are proof (that) rides’ systems and operators are doing as they are designed and trained to do to keep our guests safe.”
