‘Relax’: Mum’s simple wish after twin birth leaves hospital stunned

She left a Brisbane hospital stunned by the unusual midnight delivery of her weeks-old twins boys, so it makes sense Jaime Hughes is looking forward to “something relaxed” this Mother’s Day.

Twins are likely to spend a lifetime celebrating milestones together but for Brisbane babies Chester and Miles, each will have birthdays all their own.

The fraternal twins were born at Mater Mother’s Hospital 18 minutes apart – but on either side of midnight.

Chester arrived first, on March 23 at 11.55pm and Miles followed on March 24 at 12.13am.

Surprisingly, each boy weighed exactly the same at birth – 2.96kg.

“I had spent all day in labour, so I had no idea what time the boys were born,” mum Jaime Hughes said.

“But afterwards the midwives said they’d never seen twins delivered on separate days before.”

The twins’ birth were two of 900 deliveries at the South Brisbane hospital this past March, its busiest March in four years.

And April was its busiest April in five years, with 870 newborns delivered.

Mater director of clinical services Lee Poole said about 10,000 babies are born at Mater Mothers’ Hospital and Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane each year.

“Our busiest months do fluctuate and it’s not always predictable, but it’s always a privilege to welcome little Queenslanders into the world whenever they come,” Pool said.

After their surprising delivery, Chester and Miles were discharged to settle in at home with parents Jaime and Lachlan and three-year-old brother, Oliver.

“We are very, very lucky parents,” Hughes said.

“Miles and Chester are both so chill, and Oliver is obsessed with them.”

While the family has two sets of birthdays to look forward to, there’s only one Mother’s Day.

“I’m an event manager, so I love the idea of organising a celebration on each of their birthdays, but we’ll follow the boys’ lead as they grow up,” Hughes said.

“(But) in regard to Mother’s Day, something relaxed.”
