A man is in custody after a “significant” amount of cash was stolen from an Armaguard van this morning, according to police.

Police said they were called to Eli Waters Shopping Centre on Ibis Boulevard following reports a man armed with a gun threatened an armoured truck’s driver about 6.30am.

They said a “physical altercation” unfolded between the pair and the security officer fired a shot, before the man fled the scene in an orange Ford Ranger.

No-one was injured in the incident but the man left with a “significant quantity of cash”, according to police.

Less than an hour later, police said the Ford was stopped on Craignish Road, in Craignish, and the man was taken into custody.

Armaguard vans are heavily fortified and usually driven by armed guards to transport large amounts of cash, and robberies of the vehicles were rare.

Stay informed, daily

In 2018 ,an Armaguard van was targeted by two gun-wielding men who fled in an awaiting getaway car in Sydney’s southwest.

Crime scenes have been since declared on Ibis Boulevard and on Craignish Road.

Investigations are continuing.
