Running until Sunday August 17, the fascinating exhibition features more than 250 artefacts from the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities, delving deep into daily life, rituals and the enduring cultural legacy of one of history’s greatest civilisations – and now, a series of immersive events will bring it to life like never before.
A highlight on the Queensland Museum calendar, Discovering Ancient Egypt transports audiences back thousands of years to give a rare glimpse at the complex and enduring civilisation of ancient Egypt. Promising to inspire curious minds of all ages, visitors can wander through and explore breathtaking art, sculptures, jewellery, ancient board games, temple relics and intricately detailed funerary artefacts, uncovering fascinating secrets and insight into life in the land of the pyramids.
On Friday May 23, Egypt enthusiasts can enjoy exclusive after-hours access to the exhibition with A Night at the Museum. Running from 5:30–8:00 pm, the evening will feature a fun-filled itinerary of family-friendly activities, including an Egyptian drumming workshop with percussionist Adel Amin, a simulated archaeological dig and insightful chats with real-life Egyptologist Dr Serena Love.
Keen to dig a little deeper? Dr Serena Love will also be presenting Introduction to Ancient Egypt — a Saturday lecture series running across May and June. Each weekly session offers compelling insights into topics like pyramids, medicine, gardens and the Nile. Whether you’re a budding Egyptologist or simply curious, it’s the perfect way to explore the ancient world in more detail.
On Thursday July 17, the Legacy of Ancient Egyptian Art & Architecture talk will delve into how the art and design of ancient Egypt still echoes through the modern world – from the glitz of Las Vegas to the geometry of Art Deco and even the symbols on the US dollar bill. The one-night-only event will explore the secrets behind pyramid design and temple orientation, colour meanings and iconography, spotlighting how the ancient civilisation still inspires architects, artists and designers today.
Take a creative deep-dive into history, mythology and modern wildlife at Drawing the Australian White Ibis, a hands-on workshop happening Saturday 26 July. Led by natural history illustrator Zoe Lawrence, this full-day session unpacks the artistic and cultural significance of the ibis – a modern-day relative of the sacred bird once revered by the ancient Egyptians. With expert guidance, you’ll sketch your own elegant ibis, learning techniques to capture its unique form.
