A new end-of-week experience is landing in Brisbane this May with the arrival of GOMA Friday Nights – an after-hours series where top local DJs, pop-up performances and an intimate vinyl listening bar will bring the gallery to life, while offering exclusive evening access to major exhibition Olafur Eliasson: Presence.
Kicking off on Friday May 1 and running through until late June, the all-new GOMA Friday Nights will transform the gallery into the ideal after-work retreat – a place to ease into the weekend surrounded by multi-sensory art, live music and performance.
Visitors can experience the acclaimed Olafur Eliasson: Presence exhibition – lauded for its large-scale works exploring light, colour and perception – in a completely new way. After dark, the pulsing ‘sun’ of Presence 2026 will cast an ambient glow across the space, while the dream-like rainbow of Beauty 1993 reveals itself from the shadows, offering a striking new perspective on this Brisbane-exclusive exhibition.
GOMA Friday Nights will also feature a dedicated vinyl listening bar, where moody lighting, Japanese-inspired cocktails and a menu of snacks set the tone. Here, records will be played the way they should be, with a rotating line-up of selectors taking the reins each week, ensuring a fresh sound every Friday night.
QAGOMA’s head of public engagement Tamsin Cull said GOMA Friday Nights are designed as an invigorating end-of-week boost.
“The nights will come alive with performances by dancers from the local freestyle community paying energetic tribute to Olafur Eliasson’s early passion for breakdancing, Brisbane’s best DJs spinning sets inspired by ‘Presence’ in the River Room Bar and live sound responding to the artworks of ‘Presence’ composed by award-winning percussionist Vanessa Tomlinson,” she said.
GOMA Friday Nights will run from 5:30–8:30 pm weekly from May 1 to June 26. The full line-up of DJs and vinyl listening bar themes will be announced soon, with tickets on sale now via the QAGOMA website.
