A luminous celebration of Queensland’s wildlife is coming to Mount Coot-tha
Debuting at the end of this month, Mount Coot-tha’s Botanical Gardens will be the host of a new after-dark experience. Showcasing 11 illuminated lantern installations – each one depicting one of Queensland’s native species – the event hopes to shine a new light on one of Brisbane’s most beloved landmarks.
As the seasons begin to shift, Brisbane’s social calendar is starting to light up – in some cases, literally. One of the city’s truest treasures, the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha, will be the epicentre of a spellbinding exhibit offering an after-dark experience not to be missed.
Running over 16 days from Friday September 25 to Saturday October 10, Botanic by Night: NightGlow will see 837 metres of trail illuminated by 11 lantern installations, each resembling species native to Queensland. The collection will include a koala, a platypus, an emu, an echidna, kangaroos, the green tree frog and more, with some sculptures coming in at 2.3 metres tall and stretching up to 4.6 metres long.
Designed by Ample Media in collaboration with First Nations artists Casey Coolwell-Fisher and Nathan Packham, Botanic by Night, will explore the connections between animals, plants, water, people and Country, with the low-impact activation designed with the Gardens’ natural setting in mind, which artist Casey Coolwell-Fisher hopes will cultivate a greater appreciation for the State’s flora and fauna.

“Each animal has its own character and its own place within Country, and it was important for us to bring those stories into the artwork,” says Casey. “We hope visitors are drawn in by the animals and leave feeling more connected to our native animals, Country, and the world around them.”
In addition to the exhibition itself, visitors will be able to enjoy eats from local food trucks, such as Brazzo Boys, Feel Good Foodie, Best of the Wurst, Oh Waffles and Di Piu Tiramisu.
