With a warm welcome, Augathella Spiegeltent finds its new home at Brisbane Powerhouse
Brisbane Powerhouse is preparing is readying itself for an unmistakably Queensland upgrade as the Augathella Spiegeltent prepares its move from Wynnum to the riverside precinct. In welcoming the much-loved venues to its ground, Brisbane Powerhouse will gain a 300-capacity space by October this year, just in time for Brisbane Writers Festival and Melt Festival. Here’s what we know …
As the only Belgian-designed, Australian-made Spiegeltent in the world, the Augathella Spiegeltent’s is a one-of-a-kind venue. Its shearing shed inspired design brings an unmistakably Queensland feel to the venue, which was brought back to life after being spotted by Peter and Stephanie Oliver in 2023. Through a partnership between the Augathella and Wynnum communities, Murweh Shire Council and Tom Oliver Productions, the tent has called its Wynnum site home since 2024. With the venue now been gifted by construction company BMD to support the site’s upcoming development, the Spiegeltent has been in need of a new long-term home – which it has now found in the open arms of Brisbane Powerhouse.
Having held events like Queensland’s 150th birthday celebrations and Wynnum Fringe, the Augathella Spiegeltent’s storied history will shine through at its New Farm home. Slated to be the home of Queensland Fringe from July 2027, the Spiegeltent will finally be able to reach its full potential of hosting performing artists and audiences in a year-round platform.
Brisbane Powerhouse CEO and artistic director Louise Bezzina said the partnership reflects a broader ambition for the precinct’s future.

“Augathella has always had its own personality, it’s the kind of space that surprises people the first time they walk in,” she said.
Constructed by event designer Bruce McKinven, the Augathella Spiegeltent’s newest iteration will be revealed in October, comprising of glossy black facades, illuminated signage and clean architectural lines.
Posing no obstacle to the continuation of the Powerhouse’s full program, the venue’s construction on the Brisbane Powerhouse grounds began last Friday, and with it, the opening of the precinct’s next chapter.
