Early next year, those craving thrills, indulgence and a taste of the high life get to heed a new calling. But unlike the desires of a certain Jay Gatsby, these bright lights are well within reach.
From February 5–14, the opulence of the 1920s will come roaring back to life. Landing in Brisbane at QPAC’s Glasshouse Theatre, Cirque Empire is set to capture the glamour, thrills and raucous spirit of the Jazz Age, inviting viewers to defy the mundane and embrace the impossible with displays of deft theatrics, inhuman feats of skill and a revolutionary take on contemporary circus.
The brainchild of producers Tim Lawson and Simon Painter, Cirque Empire marks another collaboration between the two visionaries, with previous partnerships yielding mega hits such as The Illusionists, Cirque Alice, and Now you See Me Live. Having created, produced and presented world-class entertainment across 45 different countries, conquering London and Broadway alike, and breaking every record conceivable, the duo has now set their sights on one of history’s most electric eras.
“We are thrilled to bring Cirque Empire to the beautiful new Glasshouse Theatre and introduce Brisbane audiences to this extraordinary new production,” says Tim. “Whether you’re planning a romantic date night or a glamorous night out with friends, Cirque Empire is the perfect excuse to dress up, indulge and escape the everyday.”
Making its Brisbane debut as part of the production’s world premiere season, Cirque Empire will feature an who’s who of international circus talent. The line-up includes Duo Paradise performing a breathtaking pas de deux, The Reyes Brothers with their gravity-defying juggling act, aerial straps sensation Viktoriia Bubnova, the high-flying Zapata Brothers on teeterboard and more.
If this stacked lineup somehow wasn’t enough, Australian-born creative director and performer Kelly Abbey has also joined the production. With an award-winning career spanning the likes of Think You Can Dance Australia and the box office juggernaut Happy Feat, Abbey will provide a life and vitality to the choreography that words can scarcely capture.
“We’ve brought together some of the finest circus artists performing anywhere in the world,” says Simon. “Cirque Empire captures the excitement, glamour and larger-than-life spirit of the decade of decadence, combining incredible human skill with a theatrical spectacle unlike anything else on stage today.”
Whether you’re planning a romantic date night, an unforgettable catch up with friends or just looking escape the monotony of day-to-day life, Cirque Empire is everything you’ve waited for — and more.
For a limited time only, Cirque Empire is also offering a unique, on-stage seating for those craving an immersive VIP experience. Visit the QPAC website for more info and allow yourself to get lost in glitz and glamour of a simpler time.
