The Shafston Estate has played many roles within Brisbane’s story – from a single-storey cottage in 1851 to an Anzac Hostel for servicemen during World War I, a base for the Royal Australian Air Force and most recently, the home of Shafston International College until the site was sold in 2020. Now, Capella Hotel Group and Verso Projects are collaborating on a restoration project that will transform the heritage-listed estate into a lifestyle precinct known as Capella Residences.

Originally designed by renowned architect Robin Dods, the property sits like a prized heirloom on the Kangaroo Point bend of the Brisbane River, overlooking New Farm.

Capella Residences will combine world-class design, luxury interiors and hotel-inspired services to set a new standard for integrated residential living in Queensland. The project will build on the Singapore-based group’s presence in Australia, following the five-star award-winning Capella Sydney, and will mark the second Capella Residences development to launch globally after Seoul.

Capella Hotel Group president Roland Fasel says Brisbane is sitting “on the cusp of something remarkable” and that Capella Residences is the group’s commitment to being part of that story.

The precinct will offer a range of elevated experiences for residents, integrating hotel-style amenities such as expansive gardens and six pools – three of which will be available to all residents. The Capella Living Room will sit at the heart of the precinct, providing a warm, residential-style space designed for community connection.

Two river homes will also be introduced along the embankment, each complemented by a private marina, vehicular canopy and private basement car parking to complete the one-hectare Capella Residences offering.

Assisting in bringing the project to life is Brisbane-based developer Verso Projects, whose diverse portfolio includes The Marigold, which is currently under construction in South Brisbane. CEO Steve Laffey says the team is “honoured to be restoring Shafston Estate to its former glory, elevating it to new heights of luxury and excellence underpinned by Capella’s distinctive service ethos and design philosophy.”

Private appointments for Capella Residences are now open, with completion anticipated in 2029. For further information, visit the Shafston Estate website.
