Before + After

George Curtis, a UK expat who discovered a passion for amaro—the Italian herbal liqueur—after moving to Australia more than five years ago, has turned his fascination into both a hobby and a business. Amaro, often seen as a post-dinner digestive, became a deep interest for George due to its diverse flavours and complex profiles, ranging from the sweet Averna to the herbaceous Cynar and spiced Fernet Branca. This passion now plays a central role in Before + After, a laneway bar that opened in August 2022. Located in a semi-subterranean space off George Street, the cosy 32-seat bar features a rustic, homely aesthetic with a collection of retro amaro posters and a carefully curated selection of rare and international amari, including labels from Italy, Scotland, and Australia. The bar’s concept centres on pre- and post-dinner drinks, offering both an exploration of amaro through a range of imaginative cocktails as well as a menu of unique bar snacks. With a laid-back atmosphere, Before + After is a hidden gem in the heart of Brisbane’s central business district, offering a relaxed space for both casual sips and thoughtful amaro exploration.
