When the Anyday team realised that Agnes Bakery had outgrown its James Street digs, the group made the tough call to close the blockbuster pastry slinger and transform it into something new in a different location. Agnes Bakery’s successor Idle – located on Merthyr Road in New Farm – merges bakery, cafe and delicatessen under one roof, expanding on Agnes’ legacy with a broader offering and a fresh identity. Designed with a sleek 1980s Italian futurist aesthetic, Idle features an evolved menu of baked goods and savoury items (crafted by head baker Mitch Suchowacki in a new underground production facility), alongside a Euro-inspired dine-in brunch menu – including nods to culinary director Ben Williamson’s past like the signature Baghdad eggs. A curated deli selection rounds out the concept, offering specialty pantry items and, soon, takeaway alcohol. While the chapter of Agnes has closed, its spirit continues in Idle’s ambition, creativity, and freedom to grow.
