Hospitality veteran Joe Zhu, known for his success with West End cafe Picnic, has taken his biggest leap yet with the launch of Tellus Bar & Dining at The Barracks on Petrie Terrace – an ambitious and sophisticated venue designed to showcase culinary artistry and customer-first hospitality. Collaborating with Clui Design, Joe transformed two tenancies into a striking space featuring marble accents, plush furnishings, a glass-and-brick facade, and distinct areas for dining, coffee and takeaway pastries. Inspired by the Latin word for ‘earth’, Tellus is divided into three gastronomic pillars: ‘dough’ (house-made pastries served via Alfresco +1, a collaborative pop-up with Picnic), ‘grain’ (a modern-Australian menu infused with global flavours such as yuzu, tamarind and Szechuan pepper), and ‘grape’ (a curated 75-bottle wine list complemented by cocktails and beer). Driven by Joe’s creative vision and passion for pushing boundaries, Tellus aims to stand among Brisbane’s fine-dining elite.
