This September, Outer Space will present its seventh exhibition of 2025, A Seat At The โต๊ะ (Table), by emerging Yugambeh Country (Gold Coast) artist Ellamay Khongroj Fitzgerald. Showing from September 12 to October 11, the exhibition reimagines the gallery as a place of gathering, where food becomes both subject and storyteller, opening conversations about identity, belonging and cultural memory.
Through photography, video and immersive installation, Ellamay reveals how the act of cooking and sharing food extends beyond nourishment to become a living archive of family history and connection. Her works highlight food’s ability to carry stories of heritage and migration, while also reflecting the diverse and multifaceted identities of Asian Australians today.
Drawing on her Thai and Australian heritage, Ellamay reflects on her experience of growing up bi-racial on the Gold Coast, where questions of culture and place were always part of her story. As a second-generation Asian Australian, she uses her practice to explore how personal memories and shared histories shape identity, belonging and the passing on of tradition.
Both intimate and communal, A Seat At The โต๊ะ (Table) invites audiences to sit with these stories and consider food’s enduring role in sustaining connection across generations.
