Simon Cutler explores perspective in new exhibition ‘Afterimage’, a compelling new body of work that challenges viewers to look closer, stay longer, and reconsider their own perspectives.
In an image saturated, screen based age, Cutler’s latest exhibition offers a deliberate counterpoint. The painted works in Afterimage blend two distinct artistic threads: ‘dark’, as if underexposed, imagery and ‘light’, a series of parallel “paper works”. The underexposed images, characterized by soft moods and deep shadows, are designed to force the viewer to search the surface, rewarding those who linger with at first, unseen detail. The painted paper works have a similar effect, causing the viewer to pause and reflect on what they are actually seeing.
