For a limited time this January, Ballet Theatre Queensland is inviting fans of Alice in Wonderland to step through the looking glass and onto the silver screen to experience a fresh take on the beloved story.
In a dazzling new reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, BTQ’s Alice in Wonderland will swap 1800’s Victorian England for the golden age of 1930s America, brought to life by bold choreography and a jazz-infused score. Watch in wonder as Alice tumbles not down a rabbit hole, but into the glitzy dreamscape of a glamorous Hollywood sound stage, where a world of eccentric characters, syncopated tea parties and flamingo showgirls awaits.
This landmark production marks BTQ’s second brand-new full-length ballet in the last two years and continues the company’s commitment to creating original Australian works of scale and ambition. Ballet Theatre Queensland brings the tale of Alice in Wonderland to life in way you’ve never seen before with original choreography and direction by Clare Morehen, paired with a dazzling score by Lucas D. Lynch performed live by the Cadenza Chamber Players and surreal set design by Josh McIntosh. Performed by a 65-strong company of talented young dancers aged 8-22, alongside professional guest artists, and costumed by Rebekah Ellis, BTQ’s Alice in Wonderland evokes the theatrical spectacle of Hollywood’s studio era.
Alice in Wonderland will host its opening night on Thursday January 22 at 7:30 pm, with six more showings across the weekend – 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm on Sunday. Tickets can be purchased on the QPAC website.
