Bangarra Dance Theatre returns to the Clancestry festival program in 2025 with Illume – a bold new production focusing on the vital role of light in First Nations culture and the urgent realities of its disruption.

Premiering at QPAC’s Playhouse Theatre from August 1–9, Illume is an electrifying experience of dance, music and visual art that explores light as a life force, a spiritual connector and a source of ancient cultural knowledge. Through a kaleidoscope of images, patterns and synergies, Bangarra Dance Theatre’s latest work not only celebrates light as a storyteller and a bridge between worlds – it’s also a warning. Today, light pollution doesn’t just block stars, it threatens First Nations’ connection to sky country and blurs access to ancient celestial knowledge. Mirning choreographer Frances Rings and Goolarrgon Bard visual artist Darrell Sibosado draw this crisis into sharp focus, asking whether the ancestral wisdom passed down through generations can still guide us out of the dark.

Illume is a stirring addition to Bangarra’s celebrated body of work – and a must-see highlight of the Clancestry 2025 season.
