Congratulations, Get Rich! makes its world premiere at La Boite Theatre from September 4 to 20, delivering a bold, supernatural comedy about family, fate and the ghosts that haunt us – sometimes literally.
It’s a big night for Mandy. Her karaoke bar is falling apart, her love life is a mess and in a desperate bid to turn things around, she’s hosting a reunion dinner to save her business. But when two unexpected guests arrive – her mother, who died more than two decades ago, and a mysterious woman with unsettling familiarity – the night takes a surreal and emotional turn.
Written by and starring Merlynn Tong, and directed by La Boite Theatre’s artistic director Courtney Stewart, this sharp, emotionally layered musical comedy dives into the chaos of grief, family and the weight of inherited stories. Inspired by her own childhood in a Singaporean karaoke bar, Merlynn Tong blends memory, myth and music into a razor-sharp performance that is equal parts heartfelt and hilarious. At its core, it’s a story of transformation and hope – a fast-paced, karaoke-lit collision with the past that finds beauty in life’s messiest moments.
With a powerhouse cast including Seong Hui Xuan and Kimie Tsukakoshi, this whip-smart Asian-Australian production weaves family, fate and music into a genre-blending theatrical experience – and asks whether we’re stuck reliving the past or are ready to remix it.
A major international co-production with Singapore Repertory Theatre and Sydney Theatre Company, Congratulations, Get Rich! debuts at Brisbane Festival before touring to Singapore from October 29 and Sydney from November 21.
