Singaporean artist and writer Ho Rui An brings his acclaimed video work Ultimate Coin Test China High-Speed Rail to the Institute of Modern Art, using a viral internet trend to examine the forces driving global capitalism. Centred on the spectacle of coins balancing upright aboard China’s high-speed trains, the work playfully unpacks ideas of technological progress, labour, infrastructure and economic acceleration, revealing the unseen systems that underpin our increasingly interconnected world. Blending contemporary art, cinema and critical theory, Ho’s thought-provoking practice has been exhibited at major biennales and institutions around the globe.
