As it marks its 20th year, Shake & Stir Theatre Co is giving Shakespeare’s Macbeth a modern-day edge at QPAC with a large-scale reimagining of the classic.
For the Brisbane-based company, the production signals a return to its roots, revisiting the Shakespearean works that first brought the group together – this time on a mainstage scale. Directed by Nick Skubij and adapted by Nelle Lee, the production follows similar reinvigorations of famous texts, including 1984, A Christmas Carol, Frankenstein and Jane Eyre.
While remaining faithful to Shakespeare’s original text, this Macbeth is reset in a contemporary world shaped by news cycles, political theatre, ratings and high-stakes ambition. At its centre is a rising war hero whose growing influence places him firmly in the spotlight, alongside a partner who is every bit as poised as she is calculating.
Shake & Stir’s 2026 interpretation amplifies the story for a media-savvy audience, exploring the forces that shape modern power – where perception, persuasion and storytelling collide. Be quick to secure your tickets.
