Brisbane Fashion Month will shine a spotlight on style, identity and community this October with a special talk series presented by Fashion Queensland. Hosted at Queensland Museum, the two-part program pairs industry conversation with exclusive after-hours access to the museum’s blockbuster exhibition Make a Scene: Fashioning Queer Identity and Club Culture in the 90s. Guests can attend one talk or bundle both for a double dose of fashion insight.
The first session, Making Change: Cultivation, Connection and Community in Fashion (Wednesday October 15), will explore how creativity can spark collective impact. Moderated by fashion researcher Dr Anna Hickey, the discussion brings together Elaine George – the first Aboriginal model to appear on the cover of Vogue – alongside fashion academic, designer, maker and illustrator Kiara Bulley of Bulley Bulley, and celebrated fashion and music photographer James Caswell.
The second session, Making Brisbane: Fashion and Retail from the 90s to Now (Friday October 31), dives into the city’s style revolution – from the gritty boutique beginnings of the 90s to today’s vibrant, world-class scene. Guiding the conversation are three fashion trailblazers – retail maverick Thea Basiliou, boundary-pushing designer Gail Sorronda and Kat Walsh, the creative force behind Practice Studio. Together, they’ll unpack two decades of risk-taking, reinvention and resilience, while casting their eye forward to what Brisbane’s fashion future could look like.
