What happens when humanity decides to start over somewhere else? This August, La Boite Theatre and Playlab Theatre are joining forces for Second Coming, a new comedy set in a future where Earth’s species are being relocated to Mars.
Making its world premiere at La Boite’s Roundhouse Theatre, the production follows geneticist Evie and the crew of ARK MARK II as they race to save every species they can for a new beginning on the red planet. The mission is backed by GENESIS, a corporate superpower selling salvation through ‘The Second Eden’. Everything changes when Evie discovers she is pregnant, followed by a revelation that forces the crew to question everything they thought they knew.
Written by award-winning playwright Kathryn Marquet and directed by Playlab artistic director Ian Lawson, Second Coming combines sharp humour with timely questions about environmental responsibility, corporate power and the future of life on Earth. The production’s environmental message also extends beyond the script, with recycled materials incorporated into its design.
Leading the stellar local cast is Ashlee Lollback as Evie, joined by Gideon Mzembe, Anthony Standish and Merlynn Tong. Together, they bring Kathryn Marquet’s funny, heartfelt and thought-provoking vision of humanity’s future to the stage.
