What happens when a zen nature retreat meets six urban runaways? A wildly funny and slightly too-close-to-home portrayal of what happens when we are forced to confront ourselves and each other … in complete silence.

Queensland Theatre Company is bringing acclaimed comedy Small Mouth Sounds to the Bille Brown Theatre this October and November.

Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Bess Wohl, the play follows a group of misfits as they escape the chaos of city life for a silent retreat set in nature.

Featuring an incredibly funny cast and co-directed by Bridget Boyle and techno-troublemaker Nathan Sibthorpe, the play blends comedy, technology and the intimacy of collectively questioning what it means to be human.

In a theatre-first opportunity brought to life by Brisbane-based collective Counterpilot, each audience member will have their own set of headphones to become fully immersed in the experience.

In this new way to experience live performances, Queensland Theatre Company’s artistic director Daniel Evans says the deliberate choice of headphones will bring audiences closer to the action, “hearing the smallest details, from a breath or a rustle to a suppressed laugh,” so that they can feel as though they’re on stage with the characters, rather than just watching from the crowd.
