Brisbane Festival presents the world premiere of Strong is the New Pretty, a new play by Suzie Miller. Suzie is the celebrated playwright behind the sell-out hit RBG: Of Many, One and the internationally acclaimed Prima Facie. Now, Suzie turns her creative genius to the story behind the formation of Australia’s women’s football league.
Joining forces with multi-award-winning director Sarah Giles, Strong is the New Pretty takes audiences back to 2010, when an official report into the state of Australian Rules Football recommended the creation of a national women’s league. Revealing the seven years of grit and passion that went into making this recommendation a reality, this untold story is less about sport, but more so a revolution.
Fielding some fancy footwork on stage is a line-up of eight players – Lucy Bell (Appropriate), Amy Hack (Kadimah Yiddish Theatre’s Yentl), Amy Ingram (Netflix’s Boy Swallows Universe), Alex King (Bell Shakespeare’s King Lear), Amber McMahon (Accidental Death of an Anarchist), Tara Morice (Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom), newcomer Nyasha Ogden and Contessa Treffone (Picnic at Hanging Rock) – all of whom bring this love letter to the game (and community) to life.
This performance isn’t just for sports lovers but for anyone looking to be uplifted and inspired by a story laced with legacy and pride.
