Queensland Museum KurilpaCnr Grey and Melbourne St, South Brisbane Directions
With only weeks remaining before it closes on Sunday July 19, Queensland Museum’s dazzling exhibition Make a Scene: Fashioning Queer Identity and Club Culture in the 90s is offering visitors the chance to go behind the scenes with a special staff-led tour.
Taking place on Friday June 12 and Friday June 19, the free guided experience will be led by Queensland Museum’s assistant curator of Queensland Stories, Tess Shingles, who worked closely on the exhibition’s development. In small groups, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the fashion, designers and cultural significance of the pieces on display, while also hearing exclusive insights into how the exhibition came together.
Make a Scene celebrates Brisbane’s underground queer club scene of the 1990s – a time when fashion became a powerful form of self-expression, community and resistance. Packed with bold looks, archival material and personal stories, the exhibition captures the energy of a scene that helped shape Queensland’s cultural identity.
Tess brings extensive experience working across Queensland Museum exhibitions and collections, with a particular interest in fashion, women’s histories and uncovering stories that challenge established perspectives.
Whether you’ve already visited or are planning a final trip before the exhibition closes, these guided tours offer a rare opportunity to experience Make a Scene through the eyes of the team that helped bring it to life. Online bookings are essential.
