A tender love story will unfold at La Boite Theatre this spring when Whitefella Yella Tree makes its long-awaited Queensland premiere from October 23 to November 8. The award-winning production will mark a spectacular close to the company’s centenary season in 2025.

Set in the early 19th century, the play follows Ty and Neddy, two young men from neighbouring mobs whose friendship blossoms into romance beneath the branches of a lemon tree. Their relationship grows against the backdrop of a country on the cusp of dramatic change, weaving history, culture and identity into an intimate portrait of connection and resilience.

The unmissable production stars Pertame and Tiwi actor Joseph Althouse (The Visitors) and Danny Howard (Jacky), a performer with Barrd, Yamatji, Noongar, Bunuba and Ngadju heritage. Together, they will bring warmth, fragility and humour to a story that is equal parts heart lifting and heartbreaking.

Written by Palawa playwright Dylan Van Den Berg, Whitefella Yella Tree comes to life under the direction of Griffin Theatre Company’s artistic director Declan Greene, and Wiradjuri and Worimi theatremaker Amy Sole. Its arrival at La Boite, in association with Melt Festival, marks a powerful new chapter for a work already hailed as one of the most significant First Nations love stories told on stage.
