The next chapter of Felons’ barrel-ageing program is here. In its ongoing endeavour to redefine what beer can be, Felons Brewing Co. has launched two distinct contemporary beers that push the boundaries of traditional brewing.

Felons Barrel Hall at Howard Smith Wharves is known for birthing the brewery’s most experimental concoctions. Lining the hall are hundreds of repurposed red wine, chardonnay and whisky barrels housing thousands of litres of beer. After a lengthy fermentation period, two new innovative brews graced the taps on Thursday March 26.

Felons’ Amber Plum Cola is an oak-fermented Ouse Bruin. Aged for 22 months in medium-toasted American oak barrels, the beer boasts a staggering 7.4 percent-ABV. Every sip contains a rich, Christmas pudding-like character, clean mid-palate and bright finish.

With 8-percent ABV, the Yuzu Mist Fruited Saison beats out its Ouse Bruin twin in punch. The beer is conditioned in Koerner chardonnay barrels with fresh locally grown yuzu zest from Willyama Yuzu. Twenty months of ageing produces a lively and refreshing burst of lime, lemon and pear, underpinned by a subtle oak complexity.

“These beers are an expression of patience and possibility,” Says Felons brand director Dean Romeo. “Each release allows us to further explore how flavour can evolve through time, and how our environment leaves its fingerprint on every barrel.”

The beers are available on tap at all felons venues including Felons Barrel Hall in Brisbane City. Bottles can be purchased online, from the venue and from select stockists.
