Neither the Gold Coast or Brisbane has a shortage of excellent Italian restaurants, so convincing us to travel for a bowl of pasta takes a little something extra. A flaming cheese wheel is certainly a good place to start. Opening at Distillery Road Market on Friday October 30, Pastarama is the latest addition to the Eagleby food and entertainment precinct, bringing made-to-order pasta, generous Italian fare and a kitchen that puts some of the action on display.

If you’ve travelled along the M1 between the Gold Coast and Brisbane, chances are you’ve spotted Distillery Road Market rising from the roadside like a mirage, promising cold beer, good food and a reason to abandon the highway. But if you’ve never ventured beyond the exit, here’s what you’ve been missing.

The sprawling food and entertainment precinct brings together a growing collection of eateries, a Beer Garden, live music and events, all designed to make a visit about more than just grabbing a bite. And come October 30, there’ll be another reason to plan a visit.

Pastarama is taking an uncomplicated approach to Italian dining, with a menu built around the dishes people return to time and again. As the name implies, pasta is the main event and here, it’s served fresh and made to order, alongside pizza, lasagne and zesty salads. For dessert, there are just two options, and they’re classics for good reason – panna cotta and tiramisu.

But it’s what’s happening behind the kitchen window that could prove particularly interesting. Diners will be able to watch some of the preparation unfold, including the flaming cheese wheel, which promises to bring a little spectacle to proceedings. There’s something inherently satisfying about watching your dinner come together, particularly when there’s melted cheese involved.

Pastarama isn’t setting out to be a white-tablecloth Italian restaurant. Instead, the focus is on generous portions, familiar flavours and food that’s designed to be shared. Distillery Road Market’s long, communal tables lend themselves to exactly that, whether you’re ordering a couple of dishes between friends or feeding the whole family.

Pastarama opens Friday October 30 at Distillery Road Market.
