Transform into a marine scientist on a deep-sea expedition at Queensland Museum
Attention all thalassophiles: you can now explore the depths of the ocean without ever leaving dry land. Queensland Museum’s latest immersive exhibition, OceanXperience, is bringing the research vessel OceanXplorer to life … and you’re invited to explore.
After a successful run across America and its current season at WA Museum Boola Bardip, touring company Flying Fish is bringing its OceanXperience to Queensland Museum Kurilpa in South Bank.
Running from Friday December 4, 2026 to Sunday April 11, 2027, the engaging and interactive experience is designed to raise awareness of the world’s oceans, offering a behind-the-scenes look at life aboard a modern research vessel and inspiring the next generation of ocean advocates.
OceanXplorer is no fictional creation – it’s a real, state-of-the-art research vessel used by ocean exploration organisation OceanX, as seen in National Geographic’s OceanXplorers series.
Through interactive technology, curated challenges and real expedition footage, OceanXperience transforms visitors into marine scientists for the day, letting them get hands-on with the ship’s critical nerve centres and discover the thrill of deep-sea expeditions through its most essential research areas, something that not many of us will ever get to witness.
Monitor ocean floor maps and real-time data in Mission Control, put on your captain’s hat in The Bridge as you explore a variety of environmental and safety data screens which keep the vessel on course, and launch innovative submersibles in preparation for deep dives from the Sub Hangar.

Other exciting additions include analysing marine specimens in the Wet Lab and decoding oceanic data in the Dry Lab to uncover new insights into keystone species.

OceanXperience is a travelling exhibition produced and toured internationally by Flying Fish, based on the National Geographic series OceanXplorers, produced by BBC Studios Natural History Unit and OceanX in association with Lightship Earth Productions.
