This April, HOTA, Home of the Arts welcomes a major new exhibition that turns its focus to one of the world’s most dynamic contemporary art scenes. This Moment: Highlights from the White Rabbit Collection of Chinese Contemporary Art arrives as a Queensland-exclusive showcase, offering local audiences rare access to a globally significant collection.

Drawn from Sydney’s White Rabbit Gallery, This Moment: Highlights from the White Rabbit Collection of Chinese Contemporary Art exhibition brings together more than 40 works by 26 artists, spanning video, photography, painting, light-based installations and large-scale sculpture. It’s a cross-section of contemporary Chinese art from the past 25 years – a period marked by rapid transformation, tension and reinvention.

At its core, This Moment explores how artists respond to change. The works on display reflect shifting identities, question authority and reframe history, capturing the complexity of modern China through a range of bold and often provocative perspectives. Expect immersive light installations, arresting video works and pieces that command attention through both scale and intensity.

Founded by philanthropist Judith Neilson in 2009, the White Rabbit Collection is considered one of the most important private collections of Chinese contemporary art in the world. Known for its focus on experimental and boundary-pushing practices, the collection has built an international reputation for spotlighting artists who challenge conventions and push cultural dialogue forward.

Featured artists in This Moment include names such as Geng Xue, Guo Jian, LuYang, Peng Hung-Chih, Xu Zhen, Zhang Dali and Zhang Peili – each bringing their own distinct lens to themes of society, politics and cultural identity.

More than a traditional gallery experience, this exhibition invites visitors to engage on multiple levels. Some works confront, others mesmerise, but all aim to spark reflection – on how art documents the present, reshapes narratives and connects across cultures.

Opening Saturday April 18, This Moment: Highlights from the White Rabbit Collection of Chinese Contemporary Art will be free to experience at HOTA, making it an accessible and compelling addition to the Gold Coast’s cultural calendar.
