Take a peek behind closed doors at Gold Coast Open House 2026
Ever wondered what lies behind the front door of some of the city’s most interesting homes, inside the Gold Coast Desalination Plant or beyond the walls of a cutting-edge research institute? Gold Coast Open House is giving curious locals the chance to find out, unlocking some of the city’s most intriguing spaces for one weekend only.
Returning on October 10–11, the free event will open the doors to some of the Gold Coast’s most fascinating homes, buildings and facilities – many of which are usually off limits to the public.
Architecture lovers can stickybeak inside some of the Gold Coast’s most unique private homes, including Ashmore’s The De Stijl House, where the traditional floor plan has been flipped to put the living spaces among the tree canopies, complemented by a cathedral ceiling and bespoke De Stijl-inspired furniture. In Currumbin Valley, The Slow Home Project embraces a ‘more with less’ approach, while Southport’s Ute House cleverly combines architect Joe Snell’s four-bedroom family home and architectural studio under one roof.

The weekend also unlocks some much bigger doors. At Hinze Dam, SEQ water staff will give visitors an insight into the dam’s role in the region’s water supply and flood management. Over in Tugun, a visit to the Gold Coast Desalination Plant takes guests inside the facility capable of producing drinking water for around 300,000 homes a day. The city’s Disaster and Emergency Management Centre is also joining the line-up, giving the public a look inside the category-5-cyclone-resistant hub built to coordinate responses during major emergencies.
There’s plenty more to see, including Bond University’s Abedian School of Architecture and Griffith University’s Perry Cross Spinal Research Institute, where visitors can peek inside the labs working towards a human clinical trial for spinal-cord injury treatment. The award-winning Palm Beach Aquatic and Community Centre is also opening its doors, while Harbour Shores will host an architect-led tour of the new waterfront development.
