Tucked away in Carrara, Kemuri is a hidden gem serving authentic Japanese fare with soul. Run by husband-and-wife duo Hiro (a former sommelier) and Yuki (a chef), this intimate venue blends warm hospitality with traditional techniques. What began at local night markets has evolved into a two-part dining experience – a casual eatery known for its cult-favourite bao buns and a newly opened izakaya-style dining room next door.

The menu is small-batch and seasonal, featuring charcoal-grilled yakitori, Obanzai (Kyoto-style antipasto), house-made bao, sashimi, tempura and more. Sundays bring Omakase-style hot pot nights and specials are regularly announced via Instagram. The drinks list includes sake, boutique wines and Japanese spirits – all carefully curated to complement the food. Whether you’re after a laid-back lunch or a refined izakaya dinner, Kemuri offers a slice of Japan in an unexpected pocket of the Gold Coast.
