Hikoko Ito’s latest exhibition Happy Birthday 2U2 invites people to connect with their birthday twins in a huge interactive installation at HOTA.
Inspired by a cherished family ritual, Happy Birthday 2U2 invites visitors of all ages to create a birthday card for someone who shares their special day. Explore the maze-like cluster of 366 colourful mailboxes – one for each day of the year – to leave a personalised message for your birthday twin.
Each mailbox has been decorated with a happy motif, a reimagined version of the Chinese character 樂 (meaning happiness), created by Hikoko Ito and her late father, Sun Chan.
The playful and quietly profound installation is a celebration of togetherness and reminder of Ito’s gentle affirmation – we are here — together.
Happy Birthday 2U2 will run until Sunday March 15 2026, daily and for free at HOTA.
