In recent years, the term ‘fine dining’ has evolved from hushed dining rooms featuring far too much cutlery to reflect a broader range of epicurean experiences. Innovation and culinary creativity have taken the lead, offering diners a chance to enjoy exceptional food in a variety of settings. POKKOi in Coolangatta is a perfect example of this new wave of elevated eateries – fun, atmospheric and approachable, this vibrant new spot delivers a flavour exploration that is both exciting and refreshingly unique. Here’s everything you need to know …

Nestled at the end of Marine Parade in Coolangatta, next to Xenia Grill, POKKOi is Asian fusion, but not as you know it. The hidden gem is the latest offering from Tra and Rachel Nguyen, who bring their expertise from New Zealand’s culinary scene, alongside chef Cameron Knox, a master of vibrant, punchy Asian flavours. POKKOi nails the new fine dining, with a relaxed yet sophisticated approach to dishes you know and love.

Cameron’s journey into the world of Asian fusion began in the kitchen of Fourteen 7 in Western Australia, where his love affair with the bold, complex flavours of Bali, Thailand and Vietnam first took hold. Cameron delved into the art of balancing freshness, acidity, heat and richness to deliver dishes that are familiar, yet delightfully unexpected. Don’t let the word fusion fool you – this isn’t about simply mixing flavours willy-nilly, it’s a careful orchestration, with every dish purposefully designed to elevate your dining experience.

Having sat empty for almost a decade, the space itself was a diamond in the rough when Rachel and Tra spotted it. Lucky for us, they saw its potential, with ocean glimpses and ample space for seating inside and out. With lush greenery and festoon lights lining the deck, it’s a beautiful spot to enjoy a casual bite. Inside, the vibe shifts to intimate, dark and moody. With a scattering of small settings and a row of bar seats, it’s perfect for date nights and lingering a little longer.

The menu opens with a playful twist on the familiar – natural oysters, crowned with a watermelon granita that offers a refreshing bite before the sea’s briny sweetness hits. The fresh catch taco with avocado puree, tobiko, and jalapeno delivers an elevated take on the beloved street food, while the ‘smalls’ section of the menu reads like a carefully curated love letter to Asian food with a distinct twist. The crowd favourite, beef rendang doughnut, is a comforting parcel of braised beef enveloped in a soft, pillowy doughnut shell, and the roasted duck salad bursts with flavour. Moving on to the ‘bigs’, you’ll find twice-cooked pork belly and crispy half-duck, to name just a few.

The experience doesn’t end with the food. POKKOi’s drinks list is just as thoughtfully crafted as its menu. The papaya margarita is a fan favourite – sweet, tangy, and impossibly smooth. Meanwhile, the Thai Basil cocktail features cucumber, citrus, apple and Taha lemon myrtle gin for a refreshing and zesty sip that perfectly complements the boldness of the food.

POKKOi opened its doors in early January and has already made a name for itself among the foodie crowd, quickly becoming a go-to spot for those seeking bold flavours, creative dishes and an effortlessly stylish atmosphere. Head to The Directory for opening times and reservation information.
