Surfers Paradise has a new spot to satisfy your late-night hankering for sweet treats, it’s called Pistachio Dessert Haus and it’s already drawing a steady crowd thanks to its mix of indulgent treats, artisan coffee and a hint of European flair.
Pistachio Dessert Haus’ owner Hala Hamad knows her way around a whisk. With more than a decade baking wedding cakes and creating countless dessert grazing tables, opening her own shop was the natural next step for the mum of four. “I’ve always loved making desserts,” she says. “Now that my kids are grown, it felt like the right time to create something that’s truly mine.”
The fit-out, designed by Hala herself, pairs black and gold accents with a feature that stops customers in their tracks – a drool-inducing twin-flavour chocolate fountain serving both rich chocolate and pistachio. “It’s the biggest talking point in the shop,” Hala laughs. “I think there are thousands of photos of it out there already.”
The sweets-driven menu is a globe-trotting mix that reflects Hala’s Lebanese heritage as well as her passion for variety and viral desserts. You’ll find everything from pistachio-laced tiramisu to Middle Eastern knafeh drizzled with rose syrup, alongside crowd favourites like house-made baklava, croissants drizzled with pistachio or Nutella, loaded waffles and pancakes. There’s also a playful nod to current food trends, like the viral Dubai cup, which is inspired by the popular Dubai chocolate, a layered combination of strawberry, shredded kataifi pastry and cream for the perfect balance of crunch and sweetness in every bite.
Everything is made in-house, from the baklava to the signature Dubai tart – a decadent pastry shell filled with layers of chocolate ganache, pistachio ganache and crunchy kataifi. It’s already proving to be a best-seller, with batches of 60 disappearing almost as quickly as Hala can make them.
Rounding out the offering is coffee from Toby’s Estate, serving it well into the evening. “There’s nothing here if you want a good coffee at night,” she says. “We sell a lot between 8:00–10:00 pm.”
Hala has big plans for the small space, including adding a selection of gourmet sandwiches and paninis to the line-up, as well as opening earlier in the day for the morning coffee crowd. But for now, Pistachio Dessert Haus is exactly what Hala envisioned – a place where good coffee, decadent sweets and a warm welcome keep people coming back. “It’s hard work,” she says, “but when it’s your dream, you make it happen.”
