If you’ve walked down Wharf Street lately, chances are you’ve seen the queue curling out of a leafy laneway. The line belongs to Public Supply, Tweed Heads’ newest caffeine-and-pastry hotspot that’s proving simple ideas, done exceptionally well, can set a community abuzz. The fit-out is deliberately minimal – milk crates doubling as tables, a handful of steel chairs scattered outside – keeping the focus squarely on the coffee, the scrolls and a drinks list that locals can’t stop talking about.

Public Supply is the brainchild of four locals with serious cred. Coffee gun Ross Whitlock, who cut his teeth running a coffee van in New Zealand, works the machine, with the support of his partner Alysha Buckingham, a hospitality all-rounder turned digital strategist. They’ve teamed up with Tweed-born duo Kallie Hunter and Kurt Foggo – the creative minds behind NBHD Studios and electrolyte drink Sur. Together, the foursome has created a venue that feels instantly at home in Tweed’s tight-knit food scene.

At the heart of the hype? Scrolls. What started as a home-kitchen experiment in Ross’ own oven has quickly become the venue’s star attraction. Made in small batches with plenty of care, these swirls of pastry have been known to sell out within 45 minutes of hitting the cabinet. Demand has already forced the team to double production, and with flavours like the Naked Cinny, pistachio, Choccy Bueno, Vegemite and cheese, and the decadent Biscoff Crumble, it’s not hard to see why. Add a dipping pot of cream cheese, pistachio or Vegemite butter for extra indulgence, or, if you miss the scroll drop, grab a bowl of nostalgic cereal like Coco Pops and Crunchy Nut.

The drinks are just as much of a drawcard. Alongside specialty coffee, Public Supply’s menu is a playground of inventive sips such as the Mont Blanc (orange-infused cold brew with orange cream), the Choc Cloud Espresso (espresso with coconut water and chocolate-cream cold foam) and a duo of matcha creations (Matcha Blanc and Matcha Cloud). For something playful, the Crunchy Nut Latte and Coco Pop Mocha, what Ross calls the ‘barista’s breakfast’, bring childhood favourites into your morning cup.

With its stripped-back setting, bold flavours and a reputation already cemented as one of Tweed’s busiest new arrivals, Public Supply is a name you’ll be hearing a lot more of. Just get there early, those scrolls won’t wait around.
