Gold Coast, you are hereby sentenced to one orange jumpsuit, four cocktails and approximately two hours behind bars.
Fortunately, this is one conviction you’ll be happy to cop. Opening this Friday on Cavill Avenue, Alcotraz is an immersive cocktail experience that transforms a night out into a fictional prison, where inmate numbers replace booking confirmations, the guards are watching your every move and every cocktail is woven into the storyline. Inspired by cult prison films and television shows, the globally successful experience is making its Gold Coast debut.
From the moment you arrive, the sentence begins. You’ll be processed, issued an inmate number and suited up in regulation prison orange before being escorted into a speakeasy-style cell block. From there, guards, fellow inmates and a network of bootlegging accomplices pull you into an unfolding storyline where the line between audience and cast quickly disappears. It’s part interactive theatre, part cocktail bar, with enough unexpected twists to keep everyone on their toes.
The experience runs for around two hours and includes four drinks, with guests able to choose between cocktails, mocktails, beer or wine. Signature serves include the Crime of Passion, a bright blend of vodka, passionfruit liqueur, strawberry, cranberry and citrus, alongside Conspiracy, which mixes mezcal, burnt coconut tequila, chocolate butter, pineapple and cinnamon into something altogether darker.
Planning a birthday, hens or bucks party? There’s another layer to the experience. Guests can secretly nominate someone in their group to become part of the story, stepping into roles such as The Mole or The Janitor as the evening unfolds. It’s a clever touch that ensures no two sessions play out exactly the same.
While the prison setting might sound intimidating, Alcotraz is firmly tongue-in-cheek. The fun comes from leaning into the performance, embracing the absurdity and committing to the role. Whether you’re trying to stay on the right side of the guards or simply enjoying your next cocktail, it feels more like stepping onto a film set than heading out for drinks.
Alcotraz opens this Friday at 29 Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise, with tickets from $65 per person, including four drinks. Whether you’re planning a date night, celebrating with friends or simply looking for a night out that’s anything but ordinary, consider this your official summons.
