The Gold Coast has no shortage of rooftop bars, but there’s one many people still don’t know exists. Perched above the Beachcomber International Resort in Coolangatta, Cooly Breeze has quietly been pairing panoramic ocean views with refined coastal dining for years. Now, following a sweeping renovation, the rooftop restaurant has emerged with a fresh new look that finally matches the calibre of what’s coming out of the kitchen – giving diners every reason to press the lift button and head upstairs.

For owner Marcondes Almeida Neto, the transformation has been years in the making.

“From day one, I wanted to renovate Cooly Breeze,” he tells us. “I wanted the ambience to match the food we deliver.”

That vision now comes to life in a beautifully reimagined space by Bridgette Ford of Arch Interiors. Inspired by the coast, the restaurant feels lighter, warmer and more connected to its remarkable surrounds, while a new balcony has increased capacity from around 65 guests to almost 100. Better still, around 80 percent of the seating now enjoys uninterrupted ocean views, making it just as tempting for a leisurely lunch spent whale watching as it is for sunset drinks and dinner.

The renovation has also transformed the way the kitchen operates. Completely reconfigured and purpose-built for the team, it gives the chefs the space and equipment to continue evolving the menu.

The food has evolved alongside the venue, retaining Cooly Breeze’s signature dishes while introducing a host of new additions. Returning favourites include the Bug & Prawn Linguine, generously packed with Moreton Bay bugs, prawns, garlic confit, chilli oil, parsley and lemon, alongside scallops, kingfish and tuna tartare. New dishes include charcoal-grilled tropical rock lobster finished with smoked butter and a light bisque emulsion, charcoal-grilled octopus with ‘nduja, salsa verde and sautéed potato, and an MB7+ wagyu sirloin served with wild mushroom and truffle risotto.

While the menu continues to evolve, Marco says the philosophy remains the same.

“We try to be better every day than yesterday,” he says.

Already, the response has exceeded expectations.

“The feedback has been amazing.”

With Black Dingo, La Stradina and now a reimagined Cooly Breeze helping reshape Coolangatta’s dining scene, Marco believes the southern end of the Gold Coast is entering an exciting new chapter. It’s a sentiment that’s hard to argue with. Combining polished coastal dining with one of the city’s most spectacular outlooks, Cooly Breeze feels like the kind of place more people should know about.
