Music’s favourite medium is having a moment. Though once a relic of another time, vinyl records have been steadily reclaiming their popularity due to their sentimentality and sound quality. In honour of Record Store Day – this Saturday April 18 – we’ve compiled the Gold Coast and Tweed’s best record stores celebrating the big day with exclusive deals, giveaways and live music gigs. Badlands’ slogan “too ugly for the Gold Coast, too poor for Byron Bay” perfectly encapsulates the vinyl traders’ easy-going attitude and laidback self-awareness. With big love for inclusivity, partying and fostering young talent, Badlands Vinyl has been selling new and used vinyl and putting on regular free live-music gigs for the last four years, and this weekend, it’s channeling all that passion into Record Store Day. As part of the celebration, the event will feature live music from synth-punk five-piece Media Puzzle and existential four-piece Jono’s Mate Sheep, both local bands with fresh records released for the day, while every record purchase comes with a free tote bag and bumper sticker. While you’re there, keep an eye out for Bad News, the free monthly-run magazine run by Badlands’ owner Kim, which features local music interviews, gig guides and more.

As Byron Bay’s only record store, Howl & Moan doesn’t have to do much to stand out. Nevertheless, their relentless stocking of vinyl records, cassettes, turntables, accessories, merchandise, books, posters and more makes them a force to be reckoned with. This Record Store Day, Howl & Moan is commemorating the occasion with live gigs from indie-rock three-piece Loose Content as they celebrate the release of debut album Forth & Back alongside Northern Rivers’ Lyrik Moses and Seraph Hrubos.
As a proudly independent, bricks-and-mortar music store, Valiant Music is a rare find, and so is its stock. Run by a team of passionate people and located in the beautiful Brunswick Heads, Valiant specialises in curated vintage guitars, amplifiers and a wide range of vinyl records spanning various genres and price points. For over a decade, the store has been helping customers hunt down elusive albums and chase their dream guitar, with the knowledge that every record and instrument has a story to tell.

If you happen to find yourself northbound, we’d recommend giving this one a whirl. Woolloongabba’s echo & bounce is so much more than a record store – it’s a cafe and bar, an occasional event space and a full-time respite for DJs exploring their sound. Known for its selection of electronic, house and techno vinyl records, and championing of diverse lineups, echo & bounce’s ultimate aim is to contribute to Meanjin’s growing arts and music scene. For Record Store Day, local legends Das Druid and Beats of No Nation will deliver a courtyard sundown dance session through to 8:00 pm, with the store carrying on business as usual inside.
While nothing beats the feeling of walking into record store and flicking through stacks of vinyls, shoppers chasing something specific can also check out The Vinyl Store.
